. . . The following verses were written by the same lady who
addressed the orator to the Free-Masons [Perez Morton] in
your paper of the 29th ultimo.
THE PARDON.
I snatch'd my pen and wrote a line,
Fair justice guided my design,
Smiling t' avenge each lady's honour,
For foul aspersion cast upon her.
No rancour did my bosom swell;
I only said--"unfit to tell,"
And bad the culprit pass his life
"Without a mistress or a wife."
'Twas keenly felt, tho' soft the touch;
The lawyer had offended much:
The silken lash he meekly bore,
Resolv'd to be a fool no more.
We women have an heart to feel;
The smart we give, we love to heal;
We pity his forlorn estate,
And grant him leave to take a mate.
